Hi everyone hope you all had nice weekend. There was a local news item in our area last night about a lady who knitted baby clothes and toys to give to local hospitals, Once again the Health & Safety nutters are in on the act and stopped her donating as they can't guarantee her materials meets authorised standards. She was obviously quite upset as everything she uses is new and has now decided that she will visit wards and give toys personally with parents permission. Talk about kicking the ones who do good. This won't affect anything we do will it Lou. Got a spare Jean Greenhowe booklet if anyone interested. bought it from internet and discovered I already had a copy - numpty  It includes poirot doll, teddy bears, topsyturvy doll etc Andrea

Lou kindly gave us a lot of trauma toys for Aberdeen ambulance depot when we were down at the knitpic. It was like getting blood out of a stone for them to accept.

FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY REASONS EVERY TOY HAD TO BE IN A SEALABLE BAG.

What we did years ago and our parents etc., we managed perfectly well. I used to play in the coal shed with the cat and I was never ill. I may have a disability now but for other reasons. :x

Oh well, good luck to us all. It has all gone too far. Get of your high horse Mag x :)

Just read Hi Dell & Mags thread on the dreaded Health & safety police. Anyone encountered the PC brigade? For years I have bought undressed dolls locally to knit outfits forthem & give as pressies to the kiddies I know . Tried last week to buy @ same shop but was told they no longer allowed to sell the dolls as it was not Politically Correct / might offend someone/ may get ' wrong sort' buying them. I was lost for words & that is rare for me!

This country gets worse!! Don't get me started!
Anyone would think what we donate is old tat, it's probably better than a lot of the imported stuff, at least ours knitted items won't be re-called for any reason!

So far none of the other ambulance stations have had their toys in plastic bags Mag - that box was definitely jinxed because we did try to give it to Edinburgh first remember and it came back to me twice refused because I didn't put an individual persons name on it - but when I phoned and asked for the name of the chief paramedic to put on the box they refused to give out any names over the phone!

Don't get me started .........

Thankfully we still have lots of places who are not playing silly beggars and are delighted with everything we send or give to them so don't give away your needles quite yet girls xx

How did we ever grow up into such a nice group of People?? With no Pc and no Jobs Worth, and nobody looking out for our health and safety.
I too think it has got out of hand now. I don't know if anybody will agree with me, but I feel, some kids will learn more by making small mistakes. Lean to far over and you WILL fall in. Take a too big a jump and your feet will hurt. Go down hill on your bike with out putting brakes on. And you will end up with grazed knees. We can be wrapped up in too much cotton wool. And as for getting an infection from the things we make... Well has anybody seen on TV a sweatshop in India, or china? Then they are packed into pretty boxes...WELL. Ok I am off my soapbox now. S S

I think we should all stand for Parliament and put the world to right. We seem to talk a lot more common sense than the politicians and the only flannel you get from us is either knitted crocheted or sewn !

Yes these health & safety rules are so silly sometimes. I saw that news article about the lady who had been told that she couldn't hand her knitted toys to the hospital shop anymore, in fact she lives on my mams road, if I knew the number I would tell her about loving hands.

The world has gone mad, like various other members I agree we never came to any harm (well not much!!!) when we were growing up, they have taken all of the fun out of growing up! My children have basically been told they are not allowed to play with any toy in the school playground incase someone gets hurt!

I think loving hands may be ok, it will probably come to the stage where everything we knit will go abroad as they don't seem to have the same health and safety rules as us and lets face it some of the places they are going I am sure they will put up the risk injury from a knitted item!!!! rather than go without.

Kids today will never know the up and downs of childhood as we older folks did.Gone are the days of sack races, climbing trees, sliding down grass slopes on a tin tray, mud pies  WONDERFULL STUFF!!!
Thankyou Helth and Safety for taking the fun out of growing up :(
I have been knitting for 55 years never caught any thing from the wool yet.
Had knitted toys that my mother made stuffed with cut material and made with ripped wool ,buttons for eyes.LH toys are all made with loving care, ime sure the child in need would not mind if it had no bag.
Makes your blood boil :x

Hi All,
I know this is an old thread, but it's so topical at the moment. I'm so sick and tired of all the Health and Safety balarney they insist on today. All the things kids can and cannot do. A friend of mine was told recently that she couldn't take her knitting into an indoor kids play area as the needles were a danger to the children! She was sitting in the 'cafe' area knitting not in the actual play area. What did they think she was going to do, throw the needles javelin style at any passing child? Not only could she not knit in there but they insisted she had to hand the knitting and needles over to be kept at reception until she left.
When I think of all the scrapes I got into as a child and all the fun we had I feel sorry for kids today. Also re the above story, what sort of example are we giving our kids? It's obviously ok for them to watch cartoons with violence included on tv, or see some of the appalling stories on the news, but they can't watch Mama sitting participating in a gentle, creative hobby!
Talk about the Nanny state! Grrrrr!

Hello

Ah your post really made me laugh !

Example
We did a "bring in some homemade baking to sell for a charity at work day"
I made some pink iced buns (fairy cakes) with no nuts

I dont think we can do this anymore, because we had a leaflet advising about restrictions about nut allergies, not showing full ingredients, concerns about home hygiene etc

Nevermind all the birthday parties I went to as a child, where mums made HOMEMADE birthday cake, jelly, biscuits etc
What is the world coming to ?

In my experience people with allergies & special diets tend to know what to avoid :D

I am afraid that if I was told I couldn't knit in their cae I would be packing up myself and the kids and going off to somewhere with a bit more sense - no way on God's Green Earth would I be handing my knitting over to anyone on their say so! Cheeky beggars - so far I have never been told I can't knit - anywhere - I have knitted in restaurants, pubs, buses, trains, shopping centres, doctors and dentists surgeries, hospital waiting rooms - even the delivery room at the local maternity during my labour (best way to keep me calm and relaxed ;0) and all that happens is nice people asking what I am making ;0)
