 My favourite LYS at the moment has to be The Hope Chest in Kinross (they also have a shop in Kirkcaldy but I have never been in there). The staff are really nice and friendly and cannot do enough for you - if something is out of stock or they don't stock something you would like they will either have it brought in from their other shop or order it specially for you :0) They are always happy to chat and will put up our posters etc gladly - The wool stock is not vast but they do have a good selection and most of it is affordable! They also have clearance bins in the shop so you can grab a bargain. They have a great supply of patterns as well.

Lou,I don't know if you have a branch of a shop called`Shaws` in your neck of the woods, they sell beding ,towels etc and have a knitting department and last week i bought a huge 400g ball for £1.99,I bought a few in fact.I got quite excited! How sad is this ? It wasn't that long ago I was getting excited about a new pair of stilleto's (Lol),well quite a while ago if I am honest !:) But I'm happy clacking away.Charity shops are great, found six balls of chunky for 1.50.Also bought Wendy shimmery yarn to make a ladies jumper for 40p a ball, jumper will only cost me four pounds.Wool was on e bay but a lot more.I have a built in remote control for sale and reduced signs.I NEVER pay full price for anything,if I can help it.

Kirkcaldy's 99p shop closed down as they couldn't deal with the competition from Poundland, shame really as they had loads of wool in there.

Same as Alloa, our 99p shop closed and Poundland opened in the same unit. Inflation eh!

For all Fifers, I was in Glenrothes today and poundstretchers had quite a lot of wool in including a huge 400g ball of self patterning (much like Elle Escapade)for £5 (with a childs cardi pattern included) Also the old Co-op is now a Nickel & Dime and had heaps of DK wool upstairs..all colours. 99p for 100g balls and £2.99 for King Cole 250g with some flecked varieties.

Just been to Dunfermline today and bought some big 400g balls of aran in Instore for just £4 each - they had a great selection of different yarns and kits in there today! Nice choice of colours too :0)

For anyone in west lothian, Poundstretcher's in Bathgate have their knitting kits down to £2 each, and they have the big balls of aran & baby wool in. I like to go into Maelena's round the back of the new Fads. She mostly does Sirdar stuff but you can usually get a bargain in the odd ball bucket. And if I have time I get my DH to drive me along to Whitburn to the wee wool shop at the cross. It's one of the older shops that's been there since I was wee, but the owner is really helpful and interested in your projects.

In Edinburgh, I go to Pins and Needles at Tollcross - lovely range of wool, reasonably priced. I also go to Edinburgh Bargain Stores on the Southside which sells everything - including a good range of colours of DK wool. And lastly Ali's Cave on Lothian Road has cheap wool - 99p for 100g DK - but a more limited range of colours.

In Inverness, I like Hobby Haven in the Victorian Market for the range and Nickel'n'Dime on Academy Street for the cheapness!

Charity shops don't seem to do much wool these days - which is a real pity.

Aldis are getting their knitting wool in this Thursday (12th March) girls - looks like they are going to be mobbed by knitters as the prices are great and there is a good assortment of colours etc.

From their leaflet:-

6pairs knitting needles for £3.79
DK 5 x 100g balls £3.79 (white/chocolate/bluebell/red/mink/petrol/grey or green)
Aran 400g ball £3.79 (cream/red/black/teal and lilac)
Baby DK 250g ball £2.29 (white/pink/mint/baby blue/lemon)

Scarf Kits (3 x 50g yarn, 1 pr needles, pattern) £3.29 (7 cols/5 designs)

If you ask nicely at your local store the manager will no doubt put what you want aside for you so you won't be disappointed. Zandra is all set to put aside any we want and she is going to pop into the Kelty meeting on Monday to see if the girls are wanting any :0)

Does anyone have a B&M discount store - their range of wool isn't great but nice colours at 99p for 100grm. Boyes stores are always a good bet especially at sale time, but my favourite is Kemps wool shop on web -prices are unreal. Hi-Dell

Just had a look at Kemps website - what lovely stuff!! The price for DK is more or less the same as I pay at Boyes or my local factory shop, but the more unusual yarns are very reasonable. Thanks for telling us about it.
