Well, we (hubby & I) managed to visit the Neonatal unit here in Aberdeen with the 2 very large boxes of "samples" which Lou sent up. First stop was the ward for `babies born asleep` where we met a lovely nurse who was very surprised at the size of the donation. She explained what sort of things they use on that particular ward and picked out the items which would be suitable. She was delighted in particular with the wee angel wraps and burial gowns, and told us that they prefer to use white or cream rather than pink or blue as, at that stage, the sex of the babies is very often not known. Unisex items are therefore more suitable, although a wee bit of pink or blue trim is acceptable. They don`t use knitted items at all on that ward, apart from the lovely little blankets.
Next was the Special nursery, for the premature tinies or ones who need special attention.
The nursery nurse was overwhelmed by the generosity of LH helpers. I was going to take the knitted burial gowns out of the box but she asked me to leave them, as they sometimes have wee ones who don`t make it and they don`t mind the knitted ones.
When we left, the nurse was going away to unpack the boxes and find out what other goodies were there - she`d found some sets of cardies etc and said they would be ideal for `going home`outfits. She was just like a child at Christmas. You can all be assured that the clothes made by your Loving Hands was very much appreciated.
Sorry if I`ve rambled on a bit, off to do some knitting for a while, and maybe have something fattening with my cuppa.
Elaine.
