I thought I'd try some basic crochet - been years since I did any. Have got some lovely soft baby 4ply so figured I'd just keep making the granny square bigger until it looked big enough to put a baby in :D

But it's so not square! The corners are sort of pulling out into almost a diamond shape. I'm going to carry on with it as I'm sure it will still keep someone warm. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong with it?

How many chains are you doing at the corners?

2 at the corners and 1 for the in-between ones along the edges. I got a pattern from the internet yesterday and followed that. Do I need to just do one at the corners too?

Hmm! I don't normally do a chain in between on the edges, just 2 chain in the corners, although I see Attic24 does chain in between and her stuff is beautiful!
I think it's probably a tension issue, have you got a size smaller hook, that may help?

Well you could try experimenting at one corner because it could be a tension issue. I, for example, don't do any chains along the edge but do 3 chains at the corner. The good thing about crochet is that it is very forgiving and you don't need to unravel things - you could start doing 3 chain at the corners and just continue doing the one chain between each treble along the edge and it might then help with the shaping.

I remember the first blanket I ever crocheted. For some strange reason I had done a corner in the middle of a row and didn't notice at the time - crocheted about another 50 rounds after that and ended up with the strangest shaped blanket ever! My grandmother never mentioned the shape when I gave her the blanket! hahaha

With granny squares, on the corners, normally there will be one or more chains between the stitches, ie 2 dc/tc, 1/2 chains, 2dc/tc. That helps your corners along. I usually do 3 dc/tc, 2/3 dc/tc, and 3 dc/tc. I have been doing granny squares since I was about 8! It is still the easiest way I know of making afghans, etcs.

Hope this helps.

Have we all got our own methods?
I do 3 tr in each space along the edge and then 3tr 1ch 3tr in the corner - works for me.

Hi Barbara

I think it is still the same basic thing, it just eases the corner around. There are lots of variations.

Thanks for all the advice and tips. Am now leaving out the 1 chain along the sides and it is nearer square-shaped. Still not perfect but I'm sure someone will be able to make use of them. It won't be flat once you put a baby in there anyway!

Thanks again for all the replies - you lot are great :D
