1. The knitting technique is at least 700 years old
Knitting, crocheting and weaving are three fabric creation techniques which are often compared by historians. In terms of age, knitting falls in between the other two, with weaving being the oldest technique. The term knitting was constructed in the 14th century and it is believed that the technique started with the Crusades in western Middle East. It was not easy for archeologists to determine the history of the knitting technique as knitted artifacts which were uncovered have usually decayed for years. Moreover, the tools that were found in the speculated origin of knitting were at times thought to be used for other purposes.

2. The knitting technique evolved from an older technique
The oldest knitted artifacts found are made from a technique known as Nålebinding, a Danish term meaning binding with needles. The craft is almost the same as modern knitting except for the different technique of pulling and looping. It is also described as a hybrid form of knitting and crocheting.

3. Knitting was a Male Occupation
Yes, you read that right! Unlike modern days where knitting is seen as a feminine activity, it was once an all men craftsmanship founded in Paris in the year 1527. During the 1500s knitting union, no women were allowed at all. Shocking!

4. Knitting Machine invention turned knitting into a hobby
In the year 1589, the first knitting machine was invented by William Lee which later transformed the knitting industry. With machinery, knitted products were produced at a much faster rate. During then, hand knitting became an obsolete job and hence became a leisure activity.

5. Most women started knitting because of War
During the time of war, women were assigned to pick up the pace and do the jobs when men left for war. They were made to knit as their primary task to produce socks, hats and scarves for men who were assigned to cold areas during the war. Sometimes the knitted products were delivered to places where other soldiers needed them the more.

6. Cotton and Silk were used for knitting before Wool
For the past 400 years, cotton and silk were the common materials used for knitting. However, along with the discoveries of new and more comfortable materials, wool became a popular knitting material. The production of sheep and wool were relatively more sustainable.

7. The first Knitting Pattern Book was published 500 years ago
The very first pattern book for knitting was published in the year 1611. It was written by Johann Siebmacher and comprised of 126 pages completed with needlework, charts, motifs and tapestry illustrations. The most fascinating part of the book is the graphs which are hand drawn.

8. Knitting provides health benefits
Studies show that knitting reduces the risks of high blood pressures, creates good brain developments and improvements and also decreases the abnormal heart rate cases. Knitting also provides relaxation and reduces stress hence benefiting overall health.

So keep those needles and hooks busy, it is good for your health!
