Following on from my emails with Nancy of Muddy Footprint I thought it would be good to have a little extra challenge for you :D

I have started you off with a man's hat knitted to Mayflower's pattern mayflower-s-12-ply-hats-for-sailors-t14495.html the same one we often use for Mission to Searfarers. I used two strands of DK and 5mm needles as I didn't have any 6.5mm ones, I added some extra stitches and 4 extra rows before I started the decreases.

They need men's and lady's hats, gloves and scarves for the winter. It gets unbelievably cold there in the winter. If you want to join in please send the completed items by the end of September, we will see how many we can get :D Remember to pop a note in with the hats etc. saying that they are for Bulgaria, and who has sent them!

Well that's smashing Kate, I will make a start.

Sorry to be a pain but do you think the children would like maybe hand puppets, marble maze, cuddle animal squares, and anything else the pea sized brain can dream up   I ask as it will be coming up to Christmas when the box goes, and they're all flat things :P thinking of space in the box.

From as SM says " you are your own worst enemy " that's me Loz x

I am popping a note in the post to you Kate, as I will be on holidays for the next 2 Stafford meetings with a postage donation.

Hello lovely loopy Loz. I have just re-read the emails from Nancy. She talks a lot about the old people, they have tiny pensions that go nowhere, they don't even have a fresh water supply in their homes. I think we need to concentrate on warm things for them. She mentioned socks, would you fancy making some? She also said that warm jumpers for children and adults would be great.

Hope you have a good holiday. Thanks in advance for your donation. You're a star xxx

Great idea Kate. The photographs that Nancy sent certainly would make me very thankful for everything we have here and put things into perspective.

Lovely challenge. I am wondering if these slippers would be of use. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nolas-slipper
no good outside, but may be in bed? how about ponchos/ shawls? We are so lucky to have our heating and enough money to pay for it.

Those slippers look great Pat, perfect for inside in the winter and no heating...
I am trying to get small things rather than shawls and blankets, there is definitely a need for both but with hats gloves, socks etc I can pack much more into the boxes :)

Kate, can the adult hats be to any pattern? I have quite a bit of left over Aran that I could use.

Do you think size 4-6 for ladies & size 7-9 for gents would be the right sizes for socks?

I am just putting another parcel together to send to you -
1 x blanket, 3 kids Jumpers, an adult hat & a pair of socks.
Will let you know when I have sent it.

Hazel if you have any 4ply wool you can add it to your Aran to make it double do.

Great idea, Kate. :D

I sent a parcel to you yesterday with a blanket, scarf and shawl in for Bulgaria, plus a small donation for carriage costs.

Can the hats be crocheted? I'm thinking this sort of thing :-

Thanks, Kate. I've finished the back of a jumper for Bulgaria, and am half-way through the front. When I've finished that I'll start on crocheting hats. :D

They're both lovely hats Kate and Ann. It really does make us realise we have so much when so many others have so little. If it's okay Kate I will do some scarves/mufflers for this. The muffler pattern is from the Mission to Seafarers which is 5ft long and around 8 inches wide - thought it might be good as it can be wound round the neck twice and then the ends crossed over the chest to give a little extra warmth under a cardigan/jumper?
See you at the meeting on Monday.
Hugs
Lisa xx
