I was in Lidlls today and they had bags of 4ply sock wool in packs of I think 4 balls. I think they had probably had it on sale for a while as the display was about half empty. I resisted the temptation to buy any as it is too thin for me to knit these days, not enough time or patience. I did use to knit socks for my Dad when I was a young Student nurse on night duty about 40 years ago.
Best wishes to you all.

I didn't resist and if there is one thing I don't need is more sock wool :)
I am however debating using it double to see how it goes.

Yes they had some sock wool in Lidl's when I visited on 23rd Oct. but I resisted because I didn't like the colours which were green'yellow and I think the other was beige'brown sort of stripey yarn. Dot

I'm tempted by the idea of knitting socks and even bought a pack of the LIDL sock wool (the grey/white varigated)but I do have a couple of questions.
What is special about a yarn that makes it 'sock wool'?
Can hand knitted socks be worn like bought socks ie. are they thin enough to fit in shoes, or are they only any good for using with wellies or for keeping feet warm at home instead of slippers?

jacqui, i think what makes sock wool, is it is made from wool and usually something like nylon which gives it added strength and durability.
hand knitted socks can indeed be worn like noram shop bought socks, and can be worn with shoes etc.
this weather i'm wearing my handknitted socks as they are so much warmer than shop bought once.
and being a big girl, at 6' 3" tall, i have big feet, and knitting my own i can still have girly colours lol

I've never had the courage to try knitting socks, they look so fiddly, but maybe I should give it a try. I get very cold feet sometimes. I would have to find some cotton though, do they do sock yarn in cotton?

I stocked up on quite a bit of the Lidls yarn. I got the cream coloured sock wool as I intend to dye it plus a load of the fontana scarf yarn & some of the dk too. This is one thing I made with the scarf yarn - it's deadly snuggly!

Thanks Maureen, though I confess this shawl only took 2 evenings to make! (big yarn, big hook lol). I have also done this (cashmere/silk blend): Image which took about a month & I've got a laceweight shawl on the needles too - can you see a new obsession blossoming here? I've also been up to my eyes in xmas knits for the family, still am in fact! At least I've made a start on some squares for the winter challenge flaggy thing.
Hope you're in fine fettle by the way!

x Rosie

Rosie, they're wonderful!! Silly question possibly but... do you start from the middle and work out, or the edge and work in?

Rosie that second shawl is a belter too. Such a pretty pattern. Wish my crochet was that good...but I am just completing a little bear. I am well impressed with myself. I always said I wou;ld learn to crochet before I was 60..well I've just about done it although I can only do the simplest of things at the moment. I am in fine fettle but confess to having been led astray somewhat by my newly found Twin sister!!!!!

The shawls are beautiful. What sort of yarn did you use for the second one & how long did it take you? I'm so jealous as I can only manage crocheted granny squares. I'll just have to stick to knitting
