 Here you are girls the correct version of our Sands memorial blanket :0)

This lace border makes the easy blanket, very special. Use the lace all around for a shawl, or on the top edge only for a crib or pram blanket. The blanket is our basic pattern. This pattern knits to approx. a 24" square. It will always come square.
250gm of Double Knit Wool in white or cream and size 8 (UK) - 4 mm needles

BASIC BLANKET

Cast on 1 stitch
Next row :- Make the one stitch into two stitches.
Next row :- Knit 1, into the next stitch make another,3 stitches on needle.
Continue to knit, ALWAYS knit the first stitch and into the 2nd stitch make another.
Only increase this way at the BEGINNING of a row
Continue until you have worked 20 inches if you are putting border all the way round, 22 inches if you are just putting borders top and bottom or 24 inches if it is to go just on the top edge or no border at all (this should ensure you can complete the blanket with your 250 grms).
Knit 1 row plain.
Next row:- Knit 1, Knit 2 together, Knit to end of row. Continue this way, always knit the 1st stitch then decrease into the next stitch by knitting 2 together until 1 stitch remains. You should now have a neat square.

LACE EDGING

Using Double Knit and size 8 (UK) needles Cast on 8 stitches
Row 1 ( Wrong side) Slip 1, Knit 1,(Yarn fwd knit 2 tog)twice, Yarn fwd Knit 2 (9sts)
Rows 2, 4, and 6. Slip 1 Knit to the end.
Row 3. Slip 1, knit 2 (yarn fwd knit 2 tog) twice. Yarn fwd Knit 2 (10sts)
Row 5. Slip 1, knit 3 (yarn fwd knit 2 tog) twice. Yarn fwd Knit 2 (11sts)
Row 7. Slip 1, knit 4 (yarn fwd knit 2 tog)twice . Yarn fwd Knit 2 (12sts)
Row 8. Slip 1, Knit 11 sts
Row 9. Slip 1 Knit 11 sts Row 10 cast off 4 Sts Knit to the end ( 8sts) These 10 rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern until it is long enough to fit one edge, or all around, as you wish. Sew onto the blanket

Just thought I would let you know that I emailed SANDS to ask about a crocheted version of the blanket and they are willing to accept crocheted blankets provided we can come up with a pattern which has a very tight weave in it and is 24inches square. Are there any crocheters out there who would know of a pattern which might meet these requirements?

Hi Fiona - I have made one already - see the Donations thread. I haven't seen the piccies yet I have to do this at home but Lou has probably put one on there of my stuff and, judging by her comments, I think my crochet one has passed the "test". As the knitted version is a corner to corner, I found a Lion Brand, Bright Eyes Baby Throw 80980AD that I thought was just the ticket. I made the border from what I could see in the picture but Lou has kindly put a close up on - will try it out this weekend. If you don't wish to do the border then you can make the whole 24" plain double crochet and then just go round the edge with double crochet to finish it off. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Lorraine

Thanks so much for providing this - I have now printed off the pattern and will get going. Like you said - it looks ideal and at least we can also contribute to this worthwhile cause now. If you do figure out the border then please post the pattern here and I will use that also.

Kind regards
Fiona

Hi Fiona & you other crocheters. I did create a border for the Sands blanket but been so busy not posted for ages...until now. I warn you now...it needs a bit of jiggery pokery at the outset but after that should be ok. Basically, it is a pyramid design of 6dc decreasing by 2 each time...so 6, 4, 2, 1 with the gaps filled in with 3chs. So after making the main blanket I went all the way round with dc but tried to work it so that they were in multiples of 8 +2 down each of the four sides. Join sl st then ch 1, dc in same st, ch 3, miss 1 dc and 6 dc in each of the next 6 dc, 3 ch, missed 2 dc & then 6dc again until I got to the corner when you should be able to do 6dc, 3ch, miss 1 dc & place a dc at the corner stitch, 3ch, miss 1dc & back to your 6dc. Join round with tr in starting dc which will leave your thread at the top of your pseudo 3ch so you can now start with 3ch and dc in 3ch sp. Keep going round by doing the pyramid thing with a dc in the 3ch sp followed by 3 ch and then place your next dc 1 dc in on your 6dc base & carry on like this around. When you complete your pyramid, you need to go round one more time with the dc, 3ch thing. Next row you need to go round again but dec dc over 3 lots of 3ch over pyramid peak so that you nip it in. Last round, you need to create peaks inbetween the pyramid by working 5dc in 3 ch sp, 2 htr, tr, 2htr in next 3ch sp & 5 dc in following 3ch space with dc in the nipped in dec dc. It may become clearer as you do it as it is very visual. Phew....good luck out there if you can follow this! Give me a shout if you try it and need help!

Well done Lorraine for working out the crochet border for the Sands blanket. It must have taken you quite a while and I am sure all the crocheters out there will appreciate it. I am still having a try now and then with crochet but I don't seem to be getting very far. I will perservere and may be one day I will produce something that is worthy of photographing

Molly
