I'm knitting a collar onto a cardigan and the pattern says to "inc in next st". I took that as needing to knit into the front and the back of the next stitch but on the next row I found doing that a little hole. Could I do a m1 and it still look okay? No idea if one can be substituted for the other.

Thanks!

Winter knitter . What sort of border has the collar?. If it is something like a moss st. That small hole may disappear. Other than that I think what you did first time sounds ok to me. I could understand there being a hole if you picked the loop up in-between stitches. But Back and front into the same stitch sounds good. Good luck
