Knit for Nowt
Knit-for-Nowt has diversified from how it used to work. Clare is now specialising in helping children who have suffered trauma to talk through it with physcologists. They use glove puppets, some with opening mouths and others representing family members, and worry monsters with zip up mouths where worries can be posted and zipped away. They are no longer accepting any other items.

For a further explanation of the change of course for Knit for Nowt, I have copied and pasted this exerpt from the last KFN newsletter -

As you probably know, Knit-for-Nowt started as a charity to help people in Hull and East Yorkshire to keep warm during our very cold winters. But after two years a simple email from a Social Worker in Hull set in motion a chain of events which led to a complete change of direction for the charity.

This particular Social Worker had been receiving Knit-for-Nowt knitted clothing and blankets for some time, but just wondered if we could supply some hand puppets and Worry Monsters for use in therapy with the children in her care. She said that budget cuts made it impossible for teams to supply their own. After a bit of research I found out that the use of hand puppets and Worry Monsters is an incredibly powerful way of helping troubled children. The more I looked into it, the more I came to realise that not just one or two children would benefit, but seemingly hundreds. They have serious problems ranging from abuse, domestic violence, bereavement, the worry of being taken into care – they are children struggling to make sense of an adult world that often seems cruel and bewildering.

“Well I’ll ask”, was my reply! And how generously you the knitters, crocheters and seamstresses responded! In January of this year you began to send in your puppets and Worry Monsters, and I sent them to the Social Worker. Little did I know then that once other members of her team found out what we could do they’d all want in as well!

It soon became apparent that, with numerous knitters of clothing and blankets donating, the charity would not be viable if we kept on accepting both sorts of items. So we made the decision to concentrate on the hand or finger puppets and Worry Monsters. They are so popular with therapists that we now have a waiting list.

We’ve been overwhelmed by your kindness. The response was not only from those of you who are seasoned puppet knitters, but also from knitters who had never made these types of things before but who were so willing to “have a go”! In fact many of you said that it was a refreshing change to knit something new, and for that we must say a heartfelt thank you. I think this proves that those of us who have seen a bit more of life than others(!) are not set in our ways as much as is often thought!

Having asked what might be useful, we have come up with a standard pack which is sent out for one worker. This consists of a white family – (Mum, Dad, Gran, Grandad, boy, girl, cat, dog) and an ethnic family, which is the same set of people but with tan/brown face colour. Also an assortment of animals and 4 or 5 Worry Monsters. In addition therapists can order specific puppets – the ones on offer are ones which have been found to be popular with many workers: doctor, nurse, Social Worker, policeman or woman, judge, different ethnicities eg. Muslim, Indian. The requests are often for numerous packs for multiple workers in a team, or if it’s just Worry Monsters needed, the number ordered can be about 4 for an independent therapist and often as many as 100 for a large Social Work team.

If anyone would like a full copy of the newsletter emailing to them please drop me a pm with your email address :D
